The essence of culture

Abstract. The article examines the diversity of modern scientific and everyday ideas about culture – about its essence, goals, tasks, functions, etc. The dominance of two approaches to culture is shown: social and philosophical-humanitarian. Special emphasis is placed on the social (sociological, correlating with ethnological) aspect of interpretation. Much attention is paid to the symbolic interpretation of culture.
