Anthropology of thing in the object articulations of culture

Abstract. The anthropology of the thing is considered through cognitive projections and relationships as an attempt to substantiate the cultural understanding of the meaning and mission of the objective world of culture in the context of its historical and modern transformations. The material articulations of culture serve not only as the basic framework of nature mastered by human being, but also compel society to tirelessly seek, create and change the environment of its existence, always responding to the challenges of the outside world and social disorder. The interpretation of the thing proposed by the author as a specific cultural reality is based on the recognition of the anthropological nature of material articulations, which reflect the key themes of everyday practice and cultural creation of people. The article shows the ability of a person through things to find and express the meanings and images of what human being creates and what creates him – determines his connections and relations with the world, determines his behavior and lifestyle. It is emphasized that the meaning stored by a thing is not given by itself, it only serves as a prerequisite, a prompting, an opportunity to be extracted and recognized. The author proves that there is no thing in itself, things are, first of all, what we think about them, how we use them, and what we extract from them. Author considers the different aspects of existence of things in culture by the material patterns and in the limits of current theoretical knowledge. It is necessary not only to distinguish thing as object, but also to show thing as sign and symbol of human relations. An anthropological approach to interpretation of material objects enables to explain the thing as carrier and image of human properties.

Keywords. Thing, human being, anthropological nature, artifact, culture, transformation, communication.
