Concepts of evolution and development in the semantic theory of culture

Abstract. The article is devoted to a brief presentation of the evolutionary concept in the semantic theory of culture. Focusing on some methodological issues related to general scientific and ideological approaches, the author, in addition to critical remarks, states his own concept. It consists in the interpretation of the evolutionary process as bidirectional: figuratively speaking, horizontal and vertical. If the horizontal vector of evolution is directed towards adaptation and specialization of already existing forms, then the vertical vector generates qualitatively different, new forms. A preliminary explanation of this dichotomy and its correlation with the term "development" is the main content of the article.
