Etiquette as a Phenomenon of Culture

Abstract. The article dwells upon the essence and origin of etiquette as a strictly European cultural phenomenon, at first having been the court ritual of man’s public behavior, and then becoming ever more democratic, mostly voluntary, in contrast to the imperative custom, tradition, etc. The author criticizes vulgarized extended sense of this word.

Key words. Culture, etiquette, ritual, ceremonial behavior.
