Football as a Phenomenon of Contemporary Popular Culture

Abstract. The paper examines football from the point of view of its meaning in contemporary popular culture. In this connection concepts of play as a cultural activity in theoretical works have been examined. Different aspects of football have been regarded both from historical perspective and as regards its modern condition as a part of today’s culture. Three parts of football space have been singled out – the field and players, public at the stadium and mass media audience. In examining these aspects of football such features as mythological status, cult of stars, consumerism, media popularity have been emphasized, which allows to state that main features of contemporary culture are manifested in football.
