Problem of identity crisis in modern art:
tragedy of Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades and Berg’s Wozzeck
in the context of contemporary challenges
Abstract: The article contains the analysis of two texts belonging to music culture and showing the transition from late romanticism to modernism (music expressionism in this case) in the end of the XIX - beginning of the XX century - operas "Queen of Spades" by P.Tchaikovsky and "Vozzek" by Alban Berg. Both are founded on literary texts belonging to the first half of the XIX century (works by A.S.Poushkin and G.Buchner). It is emphasized that in both cases the discrepancy between the human being and his surroundings are put to the forefront, taking the s shape of madness of the main character ( German and Vozzeck, accordingly). A number of contemporary productions of these works which give big opportunities for different strategies of representation and realization of different approaches, interests and creative ambitions have been analyzed. The author remarks on the demand for these works in contemporary culture and comes to the conclusion that they have become the basis for reflections of the director, performers and spectators/listeners on the problems of our society where the human being becomes insane because of total emptiness of externally safe and prosperous existence.
