Schubert’s “Die Winterreise” in Contemporary Culture:
the Eternal Questions of Being and Longing for Lost Values

Abstract: The article examines the vocal cycle “Die Winterreise” by F. Schubert as the expression of ideas of romanticism which have found response with contemporary audience. After regarding historic and cultural context of creation of this work the author probes into the reasons of its popularity on (post)modern culture. Both philosophic meaning and psychological aspect of the cycle are illustrated by the examples of different interpretations which have been selected by the author both on the basis of recordings and impressions of live concerts where “Winterreise” was performed.

Keywords: culture, romanticism, music, poetry, value, interpretation, perception, context, emotion.

[1] A well-known performer of Schubert’s music, Ian Bostridzh, who got philosophical education at Oxford, wrote the book "Schubert's Winterreise: Anatomy of an Obsession", which reveals his subjective view of literary, historical and psychological aspects of the cycle (see: URL: http://www.92y.org/Event/Winterreise-Anatomy-of-an-Obsession. aspx ).
[2] To illustrate this idea, we can list some performances of "Winterreise" which took place in 2014. Jonas Kaufmann and Helmut Deutsch performed it in a number of European cities on the occasion of release of their disc recording the cycle, musicologists prof. A. Bennett and A. Tiu held a series of presentations on "Winterreise", Italian bass F. Furlanetto sang the cycle in Moscow, baritone Matthias Gern and pianist Markus Hinterhäuser performed "Winter Journey" at the festival in Aix-en-Provence with video installations artist V. Kentridge, Simon Keenleyside and pianist Emanuel Ax, who is known for his solo performances, performed "Winterreise" in England and Austria, and Ian Bostridge, who is known for his intellectual approach to music, teamed up with Thomas Adès, a composer and conductor of the modernist trend, the author of the opera "The Tempest", who also turned to Schubert - as a pianist. There are choreographies to the music of "Winterreise", and university lectures dedicated to this cycle.
