The Handmade Identity: Representation Strategies

Abstract: The article focuses on a hobby popular today – handmade, to show the essential features of the modern identification process and representation practices. The authors match work against leisure project, which assumes self-expression during the realization of the latter. Handmade is aimed at implementation of a subject’s creativity towards a particular material object and the world of things as it is. The article highlights three key aspects of the identification process in the handmade project: identification of the object (a result of activity), the subject, and modern craft project with its features, such as shaping communication environment and so on.

Keywords: handmade, crafting, identity, representation practices, project, leisure, every-day life, world of things, myth, serial production.

[15] It is interesting that contemporary authors often discuss emotionality in the context of essential sociocultural questions. N. Elias, for example, marks the significance of emotions in view of national identity, saying that an individual in European Commonwealth countries will rather call himself in the framework of his nationality and ethnicity (a German, French, Catalan, Norman, etc.), than “a European”.
