To the Methodology of Cultural Studies: Discourse Analysis

Abstract. The article deals with one of most effective approaches to cultural text studies – discourse analysis, which became very popular in socio-humanitarian studies in the late 1990s and may be quite essential today, when an appropriate methodology of studying cultural texts of the past and present is especially important in the context of information overload. The notion of discourse is viewed as having multiple meaning in linguistics, semiotics, literary studies, philosophy, cultural studies. A special attention given to social meanings of text, which is related to the idea of the social world as a discourse phenomenon. Cultural texts are considered as a part of the social world, human life and those historical moments in which they are localized and interpreted.
